What Does the New 60 day Immigration Ban Really Mean?

The world is together experiencing the coronavirus pandemic today. In response to the pandemic, President Trump recently issued an executive order banning immigration for 60 days. However, what does this really mean?

This new executive order is

  1. effective April 23, 2020 11:59p.m. Eastern Standard Time;
  2. only applicable to intending immigrants outside of the U.S. on the effective date;
  3. applicable to those who do not already have a valid immigrant visa on the effective date;
  4. applicable to those without an official document other than a visa, like an advanced parole document.

For everyone else, the April 23, 2020 Executive Order DOES NOT APPLY! Some examples:

  • All Lawful Permanent Residents
  • Applicants for adjustment of status within the U.S.
  • Applicants through any employment-based petitions, or investor visas

This order is effective for 60 days, at which time the “ban” will be lifted. Considering that entry into the U.S. has already been limited, and the U.S. Consulates are closed all around the world, the order should not affect too many people. You can find the full order here.

As immigration policies and regulations tighten, it is more important now than ever to take this time to plan your future in the U.S.
